As we embrace the spirit of International Women’s Day 2025 and its theme, Accelerate Action, I extend my heartfelt gratitude to each of the panel members for their exceptional dedication in compiling this year’s nominations. Though unveiled after International Women’s Day, these nominees remain a beacon of recognition not just for the day itself, but throughout the year, as we continue to honour their accomplishments.

The collaborative effort behind this selection has been nothing short of extraordinary. It is through such incredible teamwork that we’ve been able to spotlight our colleagues across the continent for their outstanding contributions to the legal profession. Together, we embody the belief that elevating others enables us to collectively shine brighter.

I am continually amazed by the brilliance and expertise we see in Africa—talent that resonates on a global scale through the exceptional work of these nominees. This celebration is a testament to the power of unity and shared vision.

1. Efua Ghartey- First Female President, Ghana Bar Association

Efua Ghartey

Efua Ghartey, a seasoned lawyer with over 30 years of experience, made history by winning the Ghana Bar Association (GBA) presidential elections held on September 11, 2024.

This marked a significant milestone in the association’s history, as Mrs. Ghartey becomes the first female to hold the enviable position of president.

Her election is being hailed as a transformative moment for the GBA, as it ushers in new leadership that is expected to bring fresh perspectives to the legal profession in Ghana.

Mrs. Ghartey’s journey to the presidency was not an easy one.

She previously ran for the position twice, losing by narrow margins of 67 and 65 votes, respectively. She remained undeterred and spent the past six years before her election consistently voicing her intention to lead the GBA.

Mrs. Ghartey’s election is seen as a significant step forward for women in the legal profession, and it is expected to inspire more women to take on leadership roles.

After graduating from the University of Ghana, Legon, she was called to the Bar in 1991. She holds a Certificate in Basic and Advanced Securities from the Ghana Stock Exchange and a Certificate in Alternative Dispute Resolution, awarded jointly by the California State University, Sacramento Centre for African Peace and Conflict Resolution, and the University of Ghana’s Centre for International Affairs.

As a Barrister, Solicitor, and Notary Public, Efua has made significant contributions to the legal field in Ghana.

An active member of the International Federation of Female Lawyers (FIDA), Efua has held several executive positions within FIDA Ghana. She has been deeply involved in mediation, conciliation, and settlement procedures, demonstrating her commitment to alternative dispute resolution mechanisms.

Her expertise in this area has been recognized through her service as a mediator in the court-connected ADR system at the Commercial Division of the High Courts on multiple occasion

Since 1992, Efua has served in various leadership roles across organizations focused on children, education, aviation, export financing, media, and publishing. She has been a vital part of several boards and committees, bringing her legal expertise to bear on a wide range of issues.

Within the Ghana Bar Association (GBA), she has participated in numerous committees and served on the National Executive for ten years. She was also the moderator and speaker for the Chief Justice’s Annual Mentoring Programme from its inception in 2007 for ten consecutive years.

Efua before her election completed her tenure as the Immediate Past President of the Greater Accra Branch of the Ghana Bar Association, a position she held for six years.

As the Head of Chambers at Ghartey & Ghartey, she oversees all practice areas of the firm, with a particular focus on Investment Law, Corporate Law, Corporate Litigation, and Company Law. She directly manages the firm’s Private Client practice and has considerable litigation experience, having appeared before all courts in Ghana, including the Supreme Court.

Beyond her legal practice, Efua has made significant contributions to faith-based organizations.

She served as the Chairperson of the Global Board of the United Bible Societies Worldwide from November 2016 to November 2019, following seven years of service on the Global Board.

In Ghana, she completed a six-year tenure as Chairperson of the Bible Society of Ghana after fifteen years on the Board. Additionally, she successfully served as the Chairperson of the Board of World Vision Ghana, having been the Vice Chair and a member for nine years.

2. Honourable Lady Justice Joyce Aluoch (Retired)- Kenya

Honourable Lady Justice Joyce Aluoch (Retired)

Honourable Lady Justice Joyce Aluoch (Retired) is the immediate past First Vice-President and Judge of the International Criminal Court at The Hague, The Netherlands. Prior to that, she was a Judge of the High Court and Court of Appeal in Kenya, the second woman judge for that matter. She holds an LLB Degree from the University of Nairobi, Diploma from the Kenya School of Law and is an advocate of the High Court of Kenya. She has a Master’s Degree in International Affairs (GMAP), from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Tufts University in Boston, which granted her the Distinguished Achievement Award in April 2015, and in September, 2018, the same University Awarded her its top Award, “The Class of 1947 Award,” (honoris causa), making her the first black person to receive such an honor. She has successfully moved her legal profession to other forms of Alternative Dispute Resolution Mechanisms, namely, Arbitration and Mediation. She is a recipient of several National Honours awarded by the President of the Republic of Kenya, for services rendered to the nation, namely, Elder of the Burning Spear (EBS), First Class Chief of the Order of the Burning Spear (CBS), and the Trail Blazer Award (CBS)

Joyce Aluoch has been in the legal industry for a long time (50 years to be precise!) and has made a great impact in the legal field not just locally in Kenya but international as a global human rights ambassador. She is a key trailblazer who believes in women and #AccelerateAction.. Justice Joyce Aluoch has accelerated action to bring about change in Kenyan laws, ensuring that women also got basic allowances such as housing allowances that they previously did not receive due to gender inequality. Quoted in a recent IWD event:

“In all that you do and wherever you may be, there is always an opportunity for you to make a difference. I made a difference as a young Kenyan magistrate, and you can too, in whatever capacity you find yourself. Accelerating action merely requires us to take that first bold step”.

Hon. Lady Justice Joyce Aluoch(Rtd) holds a bachelor of Laws Degree from the University of Nairobi, a diploma in Legal Studies from the Kenya School of Law and a Master’s Degree in International Relations from the Global Master of Arts Program (GMAP) at The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Tufts University. She was admitted as an advocate of the High Court of Kenya in 1974.

In 1974, Hon. Lady Justice Joyce Aluoch(Rtd) was appointed as a District Magistrate II (Prof.) in the Kenyan Judiciary. In 1993, she became a Judge of the High Court. Until her appointment as a Judge of Appeal in December 2007, she was the most Senior Judge of the High Court, handling civil, criminal, commercial and family law cases. She established and served as Inaugural Head of the Family Division of the High Court and simplified litigation in Family Law matters in line with the principles of ‘just, quick and cheap’, to protect the rights of women and children. She also chaired a task-force aimed at handling sexual offences in Kenya through the implementation of the then new Sexual Offences Act, 2006

Hon. Lady Justice Joyce Aluoch(Rtd) served as Judge of the International Criminal Court from 11th March 2009 to 10th March 2018, out of which she served as the first Vice-President of the International Criminal Court from 11th March 11, 2015 to 10th March, 2018.  Notably, between 2009 and 2016, she served as member of the trial chamber for the case of Jean-Pierre Bemba, the first case in which the ICC has found a high official directly responsible for the crimes of his subordinates, as well as the first to focus primarily on crimes of sexual violence committed in war.

In addition to her career as a judge, Hon. Lady Justice Joyce Aluoch(Rtd) was the first chairperson of the Committee of African Union Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child(ACERWC) and the Vice-Chairperson of the United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child from 2003 to 2009.

In November 2020, she was appointed a member of the International Advisory Board, Office of Ombudsman of the UN Funds and Programmes, United Nations. In 2022, she was appointed member and deputy chairperson of the IGAD’s Judicial Reform Committee of South Sudan (JRC). The JRC was launched by the Government of South Sudan on 28 July 2022 to review laws, and to advise on judicial reforms and restructuring of the judiciary. Aluoch has had a pivotal role in negotiations between the African Union and the Government of Sudan to ratify the African Charter and secure the rights of children, pursued a fact-finding mission to war-torn northern Uganda on the effects of the war on children.

Hon. Lady Justice Joyce Aluoch(Rtd) became a member of the Olave Baden-Powell Society (OB-PS) in 1991. She is also now the Kenya Girl Guides Association’s (KGGA) National Trustee and a WAGGGS Honorary Associate. In her role in the KGGA, Aluoch helped establish the Peer Prevention Programme for young people. This program is aimed at reducing the spread of the HIV virus through the education of girls and women. KGGA is as a key player in Kenya in the fight against HIV/AIDS.

 

3. Hon. Lady Justice Mukamulisa Marie Thérèse – RWANDA

Hon. Lady Justice Mukamulisa Marie Thérèse – RWANDA

Justice Mukamulisa Marie Thérèse, a Rwandan national, was elected as a Judge of the African Court for a six-year term during the 27th AU Summit in July 2016. Since 2003, she has served as a Judge and a Vice President (from 2019 to 2024) of the Supreme Court of Rwanda.

In addition to her judicial responsibilities, she has been a member of the High Council of Judiciary in Rwanda since 2015 and actively participates in regional and international judicial networks, including the International Hague Network of Judges (IHNJ).

Before her appointment to the bench, Justice Mukamulisa held several high-ranking positions. She was among the 12 commissioners who drafted Rwanda’s post-genocide Constitution, served as a Visiting Lecturer in Comparative Law at the National University of Rwanda, and worked as Legal Counsel and Executive Secretary for CCOAIB (an umbrella group of NGOs in Rwanda) and Legal Counsel and Chief of Service of “Contentieux Automobile” at SONARWA (Insurance company).

She holds a law degree (Civil Law) from the National University of Rwanda, an LLB (Common Law) from the University of Moncton in New Brunswick, and a Master’s in Genocide Studies and Prevention from CCM-NUR.

4. Rehana Khan Parker- South Africa

Rehana Khan Parker

Rehana Parker is a distinguished legal professional with a wealth of experience in both the legal field and non-profit sector . Transformation of the legal profession and parity for women coupled with her judicial philosophy sees her activism and leadership in various positions. Her past Board experience on several entities both at State Owned Entities  and non-governmental positions such as serving on  the Board of Trustees for the Independent Development Trust (IDT) and Nelson Mandela Theatre Complex She continues to serve as Board member of Legal Aid SA , South African Heritage Resources Agency and as an advisory Board member to the Minister of Sports , Arts and Culture for the South African Geographic Names Council . On these Boards  she serves the  Audit, Risk and Compliance , Legal Services and Social Ethics Committees. In addition she  is a director of  multiple companies, including Director at RKP Attorneys Inc , Woza Awards (Pty) Ltd, Women in Law and Leadership Academy NPC, and Women Vuka Foundation (Pty) Ltd. Academically, Ms. Parker holds a B.Proc from the University of South Africa and has pursued further qualifications in labour law, arbitration, disability medicine, and mediation. Her notable career includes currently serving as an Acting Judge in the Western Cape. In the past , as Chairperson of the Tribunal to the Minister of Sports , Arts and Culture in heritage appeals which position she held  for 8 years and had just recently been reappointed for another term . Her various leadership roles within the profession and beyond , where she uses her voice for the inclusion  of women Her expertise in the Heritage Sector coupled with her serving as council member on the Legal Practice Council and its predecessor ,  puts her at the forefront of her insights into the profession, identifying the gaps and lobbying for transformation . She is the Founder and Chairperson of several NGOs, including SA Lawyers 4 Change and Treasured GEMS, and is a Trustee of the Sakhrol  Bursary Trust. Her human rights activism is displayed in defending occupiers and communities from eviction and championing the rights of the vulnerable.  She is often a guest speaker and moderator on television and at conferences internationally . Several awards have been bestowed on her for the various roles she champions.

5.Judge Wambura Rtd- Tanzania

Ms Wambura a Registered Arbitrator, Legal Consultant and a Non- Practicing Advocate is a retired Judge of the High Court of the United Republic of Tanzania served in the Main Registry, Mbeya Zone, Land and Labor High Court Divisions. Joined the Judiciary in 1985 as a Resident Magistrate, she presided over civil, criminal, land, matrimonial and probate matters and rose up the ladder to the post of Principal Resident Magistrate in 1999.

Judge Wambura Rtd is a law graduate of the University of Dar Es Salaam and also holds a Post Graduate Diploma in Economics from Europa Institute of the University of Amsterdam. She has also undertaken a number of short courses in Judicial Administration, Judicial Ethics and Financial Management. Hon. Sophia Wambura, now a widow, was married to the late Alphonce Mjengwa and blessed with two daughters  Theriesine and Upendo who are all lawyers.

Hon. Wambura, J was appointed as the first female Registrar of the Court of Appeal in 2007, undertaking both court, financial and administrative matters. She mentored and encouraged female magistrates to take up administrative posts. In 2008, she was appointed as a Judge of the High Court of the United Republic of Tanzania, a post which she served up to 2020 when she retired.

Apart from court and administrative duties, she is also a Trainer of Trainers in Human Rights especially Women and Children’s Rights, Juvenile Justice, Judicial Ethics and Etiquette, Gender, Judgment writing as well as Labor Laws. She also mentors young lawyers and magistrates. Values professionalism, ethics, equality, accountability and transparency.

Hon. Wambura, J. (Rtd) is a member of a number of Professional Associations being Tanganyika Law Society (TLS), Tanzania Women Lawyers Association (TAWLA), Tanzania Women Judges Association (TAWJA), International Association of Women Judges (IAWJ), Commonwealth Judges and Magistrates Association (CMJA).and formerly Judges and Magistrates Association of Tanzania (JMAT).

She held various positions such as the Liaison Person of International Association of Women Judges (IAWJ); was the former President of East African Judges and Magistrate Association (EAMJA) where they managed  to launch the Judicial Gender Policy; Vice Chairperson, Secretary and Treasurer in Tanzania Women Judges Association (TAWJA) where they conducted a number of trainings, prepared training manuals, journals and brochures which have assisted many women to access courts and get their rights. She has also prepared a number of Moot Court guidelines.

Through the Commonwealth Judges and Magistrates Association (CMJA), she participated in the preparation of the Gender Bench Book to assist Judicial Officers and other Court users and citizens in their duties.

6. Elizabeth Makhanani Baloyi-Mere SC- South Africa

Elizabeth Makhanani Baloyi-Mere SC

Elizabeth Makhanani Baloyi-Mere SC was a teacher from 1988 up to 2008 before she joined the Bar. During her tenure as a teacher she, together with a few colleagues, formed a Union called North West Teachers Union which in the present day is part of NAPTOSA.She studied for an LLB degree at UNISA from 2004 to 2008 while she was still a teacher and  graduated in 2008, the same year that she was admitted as an advocate.

Elizabeth joined the Pretoria Bar,did her pupillage in 2009 and started practicing as an advocate immediately.

She was a member of the Pretoria Bar from 2009 up to 2018 when she resigned. She served as a member of the Bar Council for the Pretoria Society of Advocates from 2013 to 2017.

She was also elected into the leadership of the Advocates forTransformation and held the positions of Secretary, Vice Chairperson and Deputy Chairperson for the Pretoria Region.

Elizabeth served in the National Forum that was established in terms of the Legal Practice Act and in particular she served in the Rules and Regulations Committee drafting both the rules and regulations in terms of the Legal Practice Act.

She also served as the convener of the election committee during the first LPC elections in 2018 and currently serves in the LPC as a council member and in the Magistrates’ Commission.

She was actively involved in the formation of Pan African Bar Association of South Africa (PABSA) and she is one of the two founding members of the PABASA Loftus Chambers in Pretoria.

She was conferred with Senior Counsel status in 2020.

Elizabeth started practising as an Advocate in 2009, immediately after completion of her pupillage. Right from the onset, her practice was mainly in the Administrative, Constitutional, Commercial Law, Civil and Public Law sphere where she dealt mainly with delict, reviews including constitutional law and general civil litigation. She has represented mostly the state in most of the matters that she did, including medical negligence cases. She has appeared in the High Courts in eight (8) of the nine Provinces in the Republic where she has argued matters, both by herself leading junior counsel and also led by Senior Counsel. She was conferred Senior Status (Silk) on the 05th May 2021.

She has been appointed as an arbitrator on a number of times and none of her awards have been taken on review. She has been appointed as an acting Judge in the Gauteng Division of the High Court, both Pretoria and Johannesburg from 2016 to 2018 on a pro-bono basis, for a period of a week at a time during every court recess, presiding over RAF trials. From 2020 to date and she has been allocated longer acting periods of a month or longer, for remuneration.

Elizabeth has been allocated unopposed motion, opposed motion, full bench and full court appeals, civil trials and urgent court duty. She has always made herself available and did her assignment with the expected diligence. Of all judgments that she handed down, only one was taken on appeal and it is still pending. This experience has given her immense exposure to a large section of the law. She has also been briefed to conduct several investigations in government departments.

Since 2017, She has endeavoured to robe in junior advocates, especially black females, in matters where she is briefed, even before she was conferred the silk status.

Elizabeth also robe in junior female advocates in matters where clients cannot afford to pay juniors and she shares my fee with them, while transferring skills.

She has always been an activist and believe in the transformation and empowerment of marginalised individuals and in particular black and female practitioners. She has an incubation programme wherein she incubates baby juniors that have just completed their pupillage programme by giving them accommodation in her office for a period of 12 months while they build up their practice. She presently works with 17 junior advocates.

7. Hon Justice Nicola Ann Sharpe-Phiri- Zambia

Hon. Justice Nicola Ann Sharpe-Phiri is a distinguished jurist, and arbitrator with over three decades of exemplary service in law and justice. Her career spans judicial leadership, arbitration expertise, legal practice, and contributions to legal education and training of Legal Practitioners and Judicial Officers.

Justice Sharpe-Phiri has served on the Zambian Judiciary for 13 years and is currently a Non­resident Justice of Appeal in the Republic of Seychelles. Her previous judicial roles include:

Court of Appeal Judge (Zambia): Presiding over complex criminal and civil appeals from High Courts and quasi-judicial bodies (2021–2025).

Judge-in-Charge, Family & Children’s Court (Zambia): Spearheaded the establishment of the Family & Children’s Division, oversaw case management, and contributed to drafting rules governing matrimonial causes and succession matters (2016–2021).

High Court Judge (Zambia): Adjudicated a wide range of cases, including constitutional law, commercial disputes, family law, and administrative law (2011– 2016).

Her leadership extended to chairing the AAdvisory Committee on Training & Continuing Education, where she coordinated judicial training initiatives to enhance professional development across Zambia.

Justice Sharpe-Phiri is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (London) with over two decades of arbitration experience. She was among the first legal practitioners trained in arbitration law in Zambia and has:

  • Presided over numerous domestic arbitration proceedings as arbitrator and counsel.
  • Conducted training programs for arbitrators under the auspices of CIArb London and the Zambia Association of Arbitrators.
  • Served as President and Honorary Secretary of the Zambia Association of Arbitrators (2001–2019), advancing arbitration practices in Zambia.

Before joining the judiciary, Justice Sharpe-Phiri practiced law for 19 years as:

  • Senior Partner at Sharpe & Howard Legal Practitioners: Led a team of over 35 staff, specializing in corporate law, banking, family law, insolvency, and alternative dispute resolution (2001–2011).
  • Founding Partner at Mopani Chambers: One of Zambia’s first female-led law firms, providing comprehensive legal services to individuals and corporations (1995–2001).

During her practice, she also mentored numerous young lawyers and contributed to legal education by lecturing in family law at Cavendish University.

Justice Sharpe-Phiri has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to capacity building through:

  • Serving as a Judicial Trainer with the Judicial Institute for Africa (JIFA), facilitating training across Southern Africa.
  • Coordinating training programs on environmental law, mediation, insolvency, and arbitration for judicial officers.
  • Holding positions such as Member of the Board of Examiners at the Zambia Institute of Advanced Legal Education (ZIALE) since 2014.

Her academic achievements include:

  • Master’s Degree in Human Rights, Conflict & Justice (LLM) – SOAS University of London.
  • Diplomas in International Arbitration Law, Banking & Capital Markets – College of Law, London.
  • Bachelor of Laws Degree (LLB) – University of Zambia.

Justice Sharpe-Phiri is a passionate advocate for diversity and inclusion within the legal profession. As Vice President of the Zambia Association of Women Judges (2018–2023), she effected programs supporting incarcerated individuals’ rights and welfare. She also facilitated access to financial services for underserved communities under the Financial Sector Deepening Zambia initiative.

Justice Sharpe-Phiri’s career reflects her dedication to advancing justice through leadership in courts, arbitration forums, and legal education. Her contributions have not only shaped Zambia’s legal landscape but also influenced regional judicial systems through her work with JIFA.

This summary highlights Justice Sharpe-Phiri’s achievements across judicial leadership, arbitration expertise, legal practice, education, and advocacy. It positions her as a trailblazer deserving recognition among the Top 100 Women in Law in 2025.

8. Hlaleleni Kathleen Dlepu- South Africa

Hlaleleni Kathleen Dlepu

Ms Dlepu is the founder and executive director of Molefe Dlepu Incorporated, the longest running black woman owned legal practice in South Africa. With a career spanning at least 35 years, Ms Dlepu has been a champion for transformation and gender equity in the legal profession. She has supervised and admitted more than 30 women attorneys and continuously mentors young women attorneys. Her areas of practice include civil litigation, public and administrative law, family law, insolvency, compliance and regulatory law, conveyancing, and notarial practice.

Her career highlights also include her tenure as secretary general of the Black Lawyers’ Association, a council member of the Law Society of the Northern Provinces, co-chairperson of the Law Society of South Africa and the first chairperson of the Legal Practice Council. She currently serves as a commissioner in the Judicial Services Commission, a tribunal member of the Companies Tribunal, a tribunal member of the Ekurhuleni Municipal Planning Tribunal, and a member of the Legal Sector Council.

Ms Dlepu co-founded Basadi ba Molao with Advocate Anthea Platt, SC in 2019. The vision has been to assist women in law through mentorship and guidance, to provide a robust support system, and to shed light on the injustice and discrimination in the legal profession. Ms Dlepu continues to mentor and train young women lawyers with half of her current staff contingent being under the age of 35.

9. Prof. Lillian Tibatemwa Ekirikubinza– Uganda

Prof. Lillian Tibatemwa-Ekirikubinza

Prof. Lillian Tibatemwa-Ekirikubinza is a Justice of Uganda’s Supreme Court.

She however, started her career in the academia.

She is a holder of a Ph.D. in Law, a Masters in Commercial Law and an LL.B (Hons) degree. She is also a recipient of a Doctor of Laws (Honoris Causa) from the University of Bristol, UK.

Justice Tibatemwa-Ekirikubinza, born in 1961, is a woman of many firsts – the first East African woman to be awarded a Ph.D. in Law; the first woman in East Africa to be appointed to the rank of Associate Professor of Law and later, the first woman to be appointed a full Professor of Law in East Africa.

Lillian was the first woman to serve as a Deputy Vice-Chancellor at Makerere University. In that capacity, Tibatemwa was responsible for Quality Assurance in Research and Teaching. She was later to occupy the office Vice-Chancellor of Makerere University. Again – the first woman. To date, Makerere which has clocked 100 years in existence is yet to get another woman serving in any of the above positions.

Professor Tibatemwa is a prolific writer with papers published in peer referred journals. She is also author of Legal Text Books used in Law schools in East Africa as essential reading. Even as a Judge, Lillian Tibatemwa-Ekirikubinza has authored books, the most recent being: Enhancing Electoral Justice in Uganda’s Parliamentary Elections: The Search for Dependable Precedents”.

Lillian is a Certified Judicial Educator and among other things is credited with the development of the Judicial Bench Book on Violence Against Women in Commonwealth East Africa published by the Commonwealth Secretariat in 2016 as well as the 1st Edition of Breathing Life into the Maputo Protocol: Jurisprudence on the Rights of Women and Girls in Africa Case Digest, published by Equality Now in 2018.

Professor Tibatemwa-Ekirikubinza is a Commissioner on the International Commission of Jurists. She is also the Vice-Chair of the Board of the Africa Judges and Jurists Forum – is a Pan-African network of judges and jurists, who are committed to promoting justice and development in Africa.

10. Honourable Justice Sylvia Chirawu-Mugomba- Zimbabwe

Honourable Justice Sylvia Chirawu-Mugomba

Justice Sylvia Chirawu-Mugomba is a well accomplished sitting Judge of the High Court of Zimbabwe, who graduated with a Bachelor of Laws (Honours) degree from the University of Zimbabwe in 1993. She was sworn into office of a Judge of the High Court on the 14th of December 2017. Her legal career started off in 1994 when she started off as a professional assistant in the employ of Mushonga and Associates Legal Practitioners, until 1995. In 1995 she joined Mapfumo, Debwe and Partners, where she served as a Partner until the year 2001. In December 2000, Justice Chirawu completed her Master of Science in International Relations (Msc IR) degree with the University of Zimbabwe. She also holds another master’s degree from American University, Washington College of Law, Washington, DC, LLM International Law, which she completed in August 2006. She is also a Hubert Humphrey fellow, who obtained a Hubert Humphrey Fellowship Certificate, a Fulbright funded program in June 2006. She was awarded a United States Department of State Scholarship, August 2005 – June 2006, where she specialized in Gender and the Law and International Protection of women and children’s rights.

Justice Chirawu is a former Director of Women and Law in Southern Africa Research and Education Trust- Zimbabwe, where she served in that capacity from October 2001 to December 2017. During the same period, she was an independent consultant on gender, laws and policies affecting women, human rights, project evaluations, workshop facilitation. She is also a former Lecturer on family law incorporating child rights and law of succession, a position she held from 2003 to 2018.

At some point during her career, Justice Chirawu was appointed Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Law in December 2015. She held the position of Deputy Dean until 31 January 2018, where she carried out administrative duties at the university. Justice Chirawu was also the Chairperson of the Department of Private Law, University of Zimbabwe during the same period until January 2018. Justice Chirawu was the Chairperson of the Council for Legal Education-Zimbabwe, from August 2021 to 28 February 2025.

Justice Chirawu has served in leadership roles both on the domestic front and international level. In Zimbabwe she has held the positions of alternative Board Member Women in Law and Development Africa, Former Board Member Women’s Coalition of Zimbabwe (2007-8), Member of the Anti – Domestic Violence Council 2008 to 2015, Deputy Chairperson of the Anti-Domestic Violence Council of Zimbabwe 2012 to 2015; May 2011 to date appointed member of the estate administrator’s council of Zimbabwe to December 2017.  Chairperson of the Council for Legal Education – August 2021 to 28 February 2025; Member of the Training Committee for Judges – 2022 to date. On the international platform she has made contributions as an expert on International Council on human rights policy : When legal worlds overlap: Human rights, state and non-state law ( Geneva 2008); Canadian HIV/AIDS legal network: Respect, protect and fulfill: Legislating for women’s rights in the context of HIV/AIDS : Volume two : Family and property law issues ( 2009); Sex, rights and the law in a world with AIDS : (Mexico, 2009); Danish Institute for International affairs : Access to justice and security : Non-state actors and the local dynamics of ordering : Copenhagen, November 2010 : World Bank contribution on women, business and the law – 2014 to 2024 (as an expert for Zimbabwe).

All the while during her entire career she is an accomplished author, who has authored an inheritance textbook in Zimbabwe titled “The Principles of the Law of Succession: Incorporating the Women’s Rights Perspective”, a UZ publication. Justice Chirawu has also authored publications in Cardozo Journal of Law and Gender Fall; Women, custom and access to justice; University of Zimbabwe Law students journal; Zimbabwe Electronic Law Journal; East African Law Journal; and a Training module on handling of domestic violence cases through the courts of law in Zimbabwe. Her most recent publication is a book entitled “Unpacking the role of the Master of the High Court in the administration of deceased estates in Zimbabwe”, which was published in 2024.

Justice Chirawu is an exceptional powerhouse and has demonstrated her legal prowess throughout her career and has been awarded accolades to celebrate her achievement. Only to mention a few; First prize in Zimbabwe Commonwealth Parliamentary association essay competition (1989); Hubert Humphrey Alumni Impact Award: Awarded in 2008 for a training of trainers in Manicaland Province on the Domestic Violence Act; and Professional Development Grant: Awarded in March 2010 by the Institute of International Education (IIE) USA to attend the 54th Commission on the Status of Women at the United Nations in New York.

Despite her well decorated career, she still continues to refine her skills, she has participated in certification programmes such as American University mediation services twenty-hour basic training: World Bank contribution on women, business and the law – 2014 to 2024 and IAWL with Clifford Chance: Fundamentals of international commercial and investment arbitration, February 2025. Justice Chirawu continues to push the envelope and demonstrate what it means to be a superhero and role model to young female lawyers across the continent.

11. J. Jarpa Dawuni- Ghana

Professor Dawuni
J. Jarpa Dawuni is an Associate Professor of Political Science at Howard University, Washington D.C. She is a qualified Barrister-at-Law before the Ghana Superior Courts. She holds a Doctorate in Political Science from Georgia State University. Her primary areas of research include judicial politics, women in the legal professions, gender and the law, international human rights, women’s civil society organizing, and democratization. Her recent books include: Intersectionality and Women’s Access to Justice in Africa (Lexington, 2022), Gender, Judging and the Courts in Africa: Selected Cases (Routledge, 2021),  International Courts and the African Woman Judge: Unveiled Narratives (Routledge, 2018) co-edited with Judge Akua Kuenyehia and Gender and the Judiciary in Africa: From Obscurity to Parity? (Routledge, 2016), co-edited with Gretchen Bauer. As a comparative scholar who uses qualitative methodologies, she has conducted fieldwork and primary data collection in over 10 African countries, the United Kingdom and Brazil.
She has held several global competitive fellowships, including as a two-time Fulbright Specialist Scholar, a Fellow of the Salzburg Global Fellowship in Austria, a Fellow of the Stellenbosch Institute for Advanced Studies (STIAS) in South Africa, and a Fellow of the French Institute for Advanced Studies at IMERA (Marseille, France). In 2016, she was awarded the Carnegie African Diaspora Fellowship to undertake a project on graduate student mentoring and research at the Faculty of Law, University of Ghana. She is the founding Director of the Howard University Center for Women, Gender, and Global Leadership established in 2020. In 2020 she was the recipient of the Women in Law Academia International Award from the Women in Law Initiative, Austria.
Dr. Dawuni has raised over $4 million in grants, gifts and fellowships. She is the Principal Investigator (PI) of a National Science Foundation (NSF) grant for a study on Comparative Demographic Variation in Judiciaries, which explores the representation of Black and Afro-descendant women judges in eight countries.
In 2016, she received the President Obama White House Presidential Award for her service on the Board of ARA-W. She is a Fellow at the Center for Democratic Development (CDD) Ghana. She is a Visiting Professor in the UNESCO Peace Masters Program at the University of Jaume 1 in Castellon, Spain. She has been a Visiting Scholar at Queens University, Kingston, Canada, and the University of Copenhagen iCourts Program in Denmark. She is the founder and Executive Director of the non-profit Institute for African Women in Law (IAWL) which focuses on enhancing the capacity of women in the legal professions in Africa and the Diaspora. She was a Global Scholar at the Wilson Center Women in Public Service Project. She served on the board of the West Africa Research Association (WARA) and the African Research Academies for Women (ARA-W). She has consulted for the World Bank and the United Nations Development Program on gender and judicial integrity.

Dr. Dawuni belongs to several professional bodies. She is a Board Member of the African Studies Association and the Nine Dots Book Prize. She is a former Co-Convener of the Women’s Caucus of the African Studies Association. She sits on the editorial board of the Journal of International Politics and Development (JIPAD) and the Peter Lange Book Series on Studies in Law and Politics. Her research has appeared in journals such as  International Journal of the Legal Profession, Studies in Gender and Development in Africa, Journal of African Law, University of Baltimore Law Journal, and Africa Today.  Dr. Dawuni has presented her research internationally at professional conferences and has been invited to speak at several universities, and international events and conferences.

12. Judge Mashudu Maryrose Munzhelele- South Africa

Judge Mashudu Munzhelele

Judge Mashudu Maryrose Munzhelele was born  in Matangari village, Tshiawelo, near Thohoyandou in Limpopo, South Africa. She was the fourth of eleven siblings born to Kale Alvinah and Thiemuli Johannes Munzhelele. Despite facing physical challenges and relying on a wheelchair for mobility, she remained determined to pursue her education. She began her schooling at Matangari Primary School before moving on to Mphalaleni Secondary School, where she completed her secondary education. Her passion for law led her to the University of Venda, where she earned B. Iuris and LLB degrees. She later completed a Legal Practical Training program in Polokwane, further strengthening her legal expertise

Munzhelele began her career as a Prosecutor in the district court (2000-2005) and later advanced to the regional court (2004-2006). Her dedication and legal acumen earned her a Magistrate appointment in 2006, and she was later promoted to Regional Court Magistrate in 2013, a position she held until June 2021.Throughout her career, she remained a fierce advocate for women and children’s rights. She led community outreach programs, educating people about legal issues such as child maintenance, domestic violence, and access to justice. Her efforts empowered marginalized communities, equipping them with the knowledge to navigate legal and economic challenges.

Beyond her courtroom responsibilities, Munzhelele played a pivotal role in legal education. She spearheaded the creation of a moot court at the University of Venda, providing law students with practical courtroom experience. Due to its success, the initiative was later integrated into the university’s curriculum, strengthening legal training in South Africa.
Her participation in the “Women and Justice” International Visitor Leadership Program in the United States further broadened her vision. Inspired by her experiences, she introduced innovative legal education programs, advocated for the appointment of a Shona interpreter at the Sibasa Regional Court, and organized legal awareness workshops for school learners

In recognition of her dedication to justice, Munzhelele was appointed as a Judge of the Pretoria High Court. Her judicial philosophy is rooted in fairness, empowerment, and advocacy for vulnerable communities. She remains committed to improving access to justice, enhancing legal education, and mentoring the next generation of legal professionals.

13.Anthea Platt – South Africa

Anthea Platt, SC

Advocate Platt is an experienced Senior Counsel with a demonstrated history of working in the legal profession and governance for over 20 years. She has held numerous leadership positions, such as Deputy Chair of the Legal Practice Council, the Commissioner of the South African Law Reform Commission, Chairperson of the Disciplinary Committee of the Independent Regulatory Board of Auditors, and Group Leader of Pitje Chambers. In 2022, she started her position as the Minister’s delegate to the Legal Practice Council. Her experience extends to various advisory panels. She has served as an acting judge in both the Gauteng and North West Divisions of the High Court of South Africa. She sits as an arbitrator for AFSA and the LPC and is on the Tax Appeal Panel for SARS, where she adjudicates taxpayer appeals.

14. Folashade Alli- Nigeria

Born into a family with a rich legal heritage, she is the daughter of Aare Afe Babalola, SAN, CON, and has established herself as a trailblazer in the Nigerian legal landscape. After earning her LL.B. from the University of Lagos and an LL.M. from University College London, Folashade began her career at Aluko & Oyebode, where she headed the Intellectual Property Law Department. Hon. Lady Justice Sarah Langa Siu is a distinguished legal professional with over 19 years of experience in Uganda’s Judiciary. She is known for her leadership in judicial administration and anti-corruption efforts, earning recognition as a ‘young pace-setter.’

Lady Justice Langa began her judicial career in 2005 as a Magistrate Grade One and rose through the ranks. She is the youngest to serve as Chief Registrar, the fourth-highest position in the Judiciary administrative hierarchy – the head of technical matters in the Judiciary. The Chief Registrar is the supervisor of the Lower Bench – comprising Registrars and
Magistrates, official spokesperson of the Judiciary, Secretary Judiciary Council, Top Management, Law Reform Committee and a pivotal officer in all taskforces in the Judiciary.
Lady Justice Langa has been in charge of enrolling and licensing advocates as well as licensing and disciplining bailiffs. She will be remembered for her role on May 12, 2021 as the first female Chief Registrar to assist in swearing in of the President of Uganda.

In 2024, Chief Justice Hon. Alfonse Chigamoy Owiny – Dollo awarded her with the Excellent Performance Award for her role as the Chairperson of the Judiciary Contracts Committee in the transparent procurement and supervision of the construction of the Supreme Court and Court of Appeal buildings.

19. Naomi Tara Williams- South Africa

Naomi Williams

Naomi Tara Williams is the Managing Director of Livingston Leandy Incorporated, a distinguished law firm based in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal. Meskerem Geset Techane is a feminist human rights lawyer from Ethiopia with extensive experience of more than 20 years at national, continental, and global levels whose contributions to human rights promotion and protection have gained recognition Human Rights Defender of the Month: Meskerem Geset Techane – DefendDefenders.

In the past two decades of her legal and human rights career, she has held positions as a UN Independent Expert, a Human Rights Commissioner, a Judge, an attorney, a CSO leader, and an academic, where she spearheaded different human rights initiatives. In her national and international work, she had success in heading litigation projects, undertaking investigation missions, training justice sector officers, lawyers, and civil society actors, shaping advocacy and legal reform, and supporting human rights initiatives of government and inter-government bodies, NGOs, and NHRIs.

Meskerem has worked closely with the African Union and United Nations human rights bodies. In her global mandate as a UN Human Rights Council appointed UN Expert in the Working Group on Discrimination against Women and Girls, she served as Vice-Chair and Chair (2018-2020), led country missions in Africa, Europe, and Asia, handled human rights complaints from various countries, developed seminal UN reports that address critical human rights issues, and co-chaired (2023) the Platform of Independent Expert Mechanisms on the Elimination of Discrimination & Violence against Women. She has also previously served in Expert Groups of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights and was involved in developing African Union human rights documents.

During her national mandate as a Commissioner for Women’s and Children’s Rights at the Ethiopian Human Rights Commission (2021-2023), she played a valuable role in human rights monitoring, investigation, documentation, and reporting during a time marked by war, conflict, and political instability. Her role involved probing grave human rights violations against women and children, including conflict-related sexual violence, and framing the accountability agenda.

Leveraging litigation and mobilizing lawyers to promote human rights has been part of Meskerem’s professional pursuit. Through her collaborative leadership with like-minded lawyers, a Lawyers for Human Rights initiative was launched in Ethiopia (2018) to advance human rights litigation nationwide. Likewise, she secured funding for training of technical persons from Tanzania mainland, Zanzibar and Pemba in Uganda on HIV/AIDS prevention care and support services; and, capacity building training of a team of laboratory technicians from Pemba and Zanzibar at Muhimbili Hospital in Tanzania on voluntary counseling and testing (VCT).

Her thesis on Women’s Human Rights and the HIV/AIDS Epidemic in Tanzania greatly influenced the establishment of the Tanzania Parliamentary AIDS Coalition and the Council of People Living with HIV/AIDS which led a pivotal role in HIV/AIDS epidemic intervention in Tanzania. Ms Maria Beata Tungaraza’s work has added value to the communities and public from the grassroots to the national levels adduced by development of HIV/AIDS Prevention legislation which is in place and functioning; gender mainstreaming in government ministries; and capacity building of religious and traditional leaders, government technical persons and parliamentarians to mention but a few. She currently heads the department of family law at the firm, a field she excels in. She holds an LLB degree from the University of South Africa. She is currently the Secretariat of the South African Women Lawyers Association Limpopo, a position she has been entrusted to for two terms now. She was previously elected to a Secretariat position of the Black Lawyers Association Limpopo from 2022 to 2024.

She is passionate about the empowerment of women and advocating for women’s rights in the profession. She gives back to her community by hosting legal talks on various radio stations, especially on family law topics, in particular and of late on customary marriages, a challenge she has seen that most in her community are prone to. She enjoys teaching and as part of giving back to the profession, she is an Instructor at the Polokwane School of Legal Practice and has developed relationships as a mentor in her legal growth.
