The minister of interior, Rauf Aregbesola, has ordered an immediate investigation into the death of five inmates of the Ikoyi prison after they were electrocuted. The incident happened on Monday morning.
Many others are said to be battling for their lives in a hospital.
In a series of tweets, the ministry of interior confirmed the incident and said the minister, a former governor of Osun, ordered an urgent investigation into the incident.
The ministry also promised to release a comprehensive report on the incident.
“The minister has directed a quick investigation into the root cause and the ministry will in the next few hours share a comprehensive update on the incidence,” the interior ministry said in the statement signed by Jane Osuji, its spokesperson.
